If our aim is to grow wealth, the first place to start is to determine how wealthy we are right now, relative to the global wealth scale? Two globally accepted indicators of wealth are income and net worth. There is a lot of communication regarding the ‘One Percent’.
If wealth is defined by income, global income statistics provide a benchmark to evaluate your personal annual income. However, the disparity between developed and developing countries and the levels of poverty around the world means that an annual income of $32,400 (just over 30,000 Euros; 225,000 Chinese yuan or 450,000 South African rand) would put the earner into the top 1% in the world in 2016. Of the roughly 7,350 billion on the planet in 2015, that makes you 1 in about 73,5 million most wealthy people!
The second indicator of wealth is net worth. This concept looks at all the assets an individual owns like house, car, investments and business. The value of those items are added together and any debts like mortgages, overdrafts and loans are deducted giving a net worth figure. To reach the top 1% in the world as measured by assets, net worth would have to exceed $770,000 (approximately 730,000 Euro; 5,3 million Chinese Yuan or 10,6 million South African Rand).
It is possible to create the impression of wealth by incurring debt to purchase large homes and expensive cars but this is a common illusion, and delusion, as the outstanding debt means net worth remains low.
